Foundations of Veterinary Business Online Program

High interest rates, rising salaries, few job applicants, and high-pressure work environments are all causing challenges to veterinary practice owners and intimidating potential practice owners. But the fundamentals of the veterinary industry remain strong and present opportunities to the well prepared.

“When an industry is in demand, you can successfully navigate even difficult business conditions,” said Jim Clark, DVM, MBA.

Clark leads the UC Davis Foundations of Veterinary Business online certificate program that is a dual venture of UC Davis’ #1-ranked School of Veterinary Medicine and its Graduate School of Management. The program, now in its fourth year, provides participants with a solid foundation of understanding in five key business areas: managerial accounting, finance, marketing, strategy, and human resources.

“The difference between having confidence in running a business in any environment and feeling buffeted by changing conditions is understanding the mechanics,” said Clark. “Our experienced experts walk you through the fundamentals you need to have that confidence in any situation.”

Sponsored by Zoetis, the course runs through May 15 through August 12 and provides fundamental business instruction through self-paced online modules. Participants then take that knowledge into an interactive environment with three live, interactive Saturday Zoom sessions covering practical, veterinary-specific business concepts taught by industry experts. Finally, participants cement their understanding through a small group capstone project analyzing the business performance of actual practices.
