With the support of VetPartners, Sadie Larner is on her way to achieving her dream of becoming a fully-fledged Registered Veterinary Nurse.

Here, Sadie reveals how Lynwood School of Veterinary Nursing provided her with the best possible start to her career by equipping her with the skills and knowledge needed to deliver the highest standard of care to patients….

WORKING in a veterinary practice is a dream come true.

I love being part of the amazing team at Lynwood Veterinary Group’s Wareham surgery in Dorset because it’s like a family and everyone is so dedicated to our patients.

I’m currently a student veterinary nurse but have recently taken my final exams to become a fully qualified RVN and am eagerly awaiting my results.

I was lucky to have studied for my nursing diploma with Lynwood School of Veterinary Nursing, which is part of VetPartners, and over the past two years the school and its amazing team of lecturers have expanded my knowledge and helped prepare me for a career in veterinary nursing.

I joined Lynwood Vets as an animal nursing assistant in 2017 but always wanted to take the next step on the nursing career ladder.

I enrolled on the two-year Level 3 Diploma Advanced Apprenticeship programme, attending college in Dorchester one day a week during term time and the other four days I worked at my practice to learn on the job. It was a great combination and it has really suited me as I find learning easier when it’s more hands-on.

Classroom time involved lectures and working on written assignments. The course was very thorough and there was a lot to learn, but the lecturers, who are all experienced and highly qualified, made the sessions interesting and informative. I’m very passionate about becoming a vet nurse and want to learn as much as I can, but it helped that the lessons were engaging and inspirational.

With such a high quality of teaching available to us, I feel confident I’ve been equipped with all I need to know to practise veterinary nursing safely and offer patients the highest levels of care.

The course covers everything from anatomy and physiology and anaesthesia to animal welfare and diagnostics. As well as animal healthcare we were taught about legislation and the role of a veterinary practice, and I found tutorials in communication really useful as I’m now much more confident talking to clients.

I improved my nursing skills while working in practice, supported by my amazing mentor, vet Selina Rumbold, my clinical coach. Selina has been there for me every step of the way, sharing tips and advice and making my learning journey so much easier.

Lisa Bugh and Val Belbin who jointly head up the nursing school were absolutely amazing, too. They were happy for me to contact them if I had a question about my studies and they were always happy to help. I’m really impressed how caring they are.

All the knowledge I’ve acquired on the course has been tested through a series of written and practical exams.

I took my final set of practical exams, the OSCEs (Objective Structured Clinical Examination), at the end of February and this was the final hurdle to becoming a qualified RVN. It will be a very proud moment when I receive my certificate and I will wear my RVN badge with pride.

The best thing about being a veterinary nurse is watching patients who have been ill recover and go home to their families. It makes me so happy that I’ve played a part in their recovery, and I know that what I’ve learned at the veterinary nursing school will enable me to do even more to help pets and support the practice’s veterinary team.

I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved and I’m really grateful to my vet practice and the Lynwood School of Veterinary nursing for helping me to get where I am today.

The Lynwood School of Veterinary Nursing has been part of VetPartners since 2018, and consistently achieves high passes in all courses, exceeding national standards.
