Vets, Animal Health And The Human Factor: Veterinary Medicine In 2015

This year’s British Veterinary Association (BVA) Congress will be held in London, at the Cavendish Conference Centre, W1 on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 September, with the Council and AGM taking place on Sunday 1 October. Much is changing for the veterinary profession at present. Political demands and changes in the sectors served by the profession, changing animal health and welfare requirements placing new demands on the veterinary profession, both locally and internationally and changes to the profession itself, both in terms of its composition and its members’ expectations are all combining to shape its future. The focus of the programme on Friday will be the ‘new environment’ and sessions will examine changes within the profession, its members and the environment in which they operate. Friday’s speakers include Professor Dame Carol Black, President of the Royal College of Physicians, Dr Helena Cronin, Co-Director of the LSE’s Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science and co-editor of the series Darwinism Today and James Paice MP, Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Rural Affairs. On Saturday the theme will be ‘new opportunities’, anticipating ways the profession might move with the times and capitalise on the changes. Speakers include Jonathan Long, Livestock Editor of Farmers Weekly, Simon Innes, formerly Chief Executive of Vision Express Opticians and now Chief Executive of the CVS (UK) Limited group of veterinary practices and Dr Debby Reynolds, the Chief Veterinary Officer.
