ESMA logo World Horse Welfare is delighted to have won ‘Best use of Social Media by a Charity’ in this year’s Equestrian Social Media Awards (ESMAs). During the 10 days running up to Christmas last year, people were asked to nominate their Social Media favourites across 15 categories via an ESMA Facebook app. The top 10 finalists in each category were selected from almost 2,000 nominations and announced on Friday 13 January 2012. Over 15,000 people voted, and World Horse Welfare was announced as the winner of our category yesterday (Tuesday 6 March). World Horse Welfare has over 10,000 followers on Twitter and over 6,000 ‘Likes’ on Facebook. The number of views of the charity’s YouTube channel rose to over 2.5 million this year. World Horse Welfare Chief Executive Roly Owers commented on the win by saying: “We are delighted to have won ‘Best use of social media by a charity’. World Horse Welfare are celebrating our 85th anniversary year, and when Ada Cole established our charity in 1927 she would have had no idea what an important role this amazing new world of digital and social communications would play in spreading our message today. Raising awareness of the important roles horses play in society, the challenges they face and what we can do to help them is an essential part of the role of equestrian charities, and social media is a great way for us not only to engage with horse loving supporters but to motivate people to change horses’ lives for the better. “We would like to thank all our supporters, all our followers on social media and of course the panel at the Equestrian Social Media Awards for recognising us with this award. We look forward to spreading the word, and striving for better lives for horses everywhere, with the help of social media and the immense support of horse lovers everywhere. Thank you.”
