This online course offers the veterinary nurse both revision and an opportunity for acquisition of new knowledge in the area of surgical nursing. The course is aimed at qualified veterinary nurses who enjoy and are interested in surgical nursing and would suit both nurses in general practice and those working in specialist institutions, this course would also suit nurses returning to practice after a break.
The course will run for nine weeks. You will be expected to log onto the website several times each week. It is anticipated that you will need to spend two to three hours a week depending on your current level of knowledge (and typing speed!) between private study and online activities.
Key areas
We will revise and relate anatomy and physiology knowledge to common surgical procedures carried out in small animal practice.
We will examine the importance of good client communication skills, in particular explore the concept of informed consent.
Looking at Infection control and sterilisation of surgical equipment we explore ways to reduce the risk of hospital acquired infection before, during and after surgery.
The role of the scrub and circulating nurse including theatre nursing skills and the relevance of schedule 3.
Peri operative and post operative nursing skills looking after the patient, before during and after the surgery. The use and development of nursing plans will be considered.
