Date: Wednesday 8th March, 2023
Start time: 10:00 AM
Cost: £195
Strategies to limit parasitic disease rely on a combination of practical control measures and preventative treatments. A risk based approach to the use of preventative products is vital to safeguard animal and human health, while ensuring over treatment does not take place and it allows bespoke advice to be formulated based on regional risk, lifestyle of the pet and future travel plans.
Nurses can play a vital role in collection of the information required to formulate these parasite control plans and are well placed at the front of client care to run preventative healthcare clinics but with an ever-increasing range of products available it can be hard to know what to choose and when in order to ensure client’s specific requirements are met.
This course will provide vet nurses with the training needed to consider the parasite control requirements for cats and dogs and show the role they can have in helping formulate effective parasite prevention for them. Real life cases will be used, so you can have a go at formulating your own parasite control plans and return to practice with confidence required to take on this new role.
Topics to be covered include:
An update on pet parasites and the current status on emerging parasites in the UK
Parasite control requirements and the importance of prevention
Formulating individual preventative regimes for clients, dependant on their situation
An update on current preventative parasite drugs available, how they work and which to pick
Setting up parasite prevention vet nurse clinics
Methods for assessing risks including data gathering from practice records, in clinics, via questionnaires and algorithm based risk checkers.
N.B. This course is AMTRA accredited and worth 40 points. Although aimed predominantly at Vet Nurses, we welcome SQPs and other support staff who may wish to further their knowledge of parasite prevention.
