This course is aimed at vets in general practice looking for practical advice on the management of cardiac disease. It will teach you how to safely diagnose and treat heart failure in cats and dogs, using real case examples of the most prevalent congenital and acquired diseases, and referencing evidence-based medicine.
Diagnostic principles will focus on enabling basic management rather than definitive diagnoses of specific diseases, which may require referral. However, where referral is not an option, we will discuss the most prevalent acquired diseases in each species, so that these are covered in enough detail for long-term management and client education purposes.
Important species differences will be detailed, in terms of clinical findings, which may have very different implications. We will also cover treatment options, which are often inappropriately duplicated between species. Welfare issues will also be addressed regarding the approach to examination and diagnosis, and management - both short and long-term.
The five key things delegates will learn from this course are:
How to recognise the signs of heart failure from client history and clinical examination
The use of diagnostic imaging within the constraints of general practice, and when to refer
Case management: emergency, moderate and subclinical, including implications of the Evaluation of Pimobendan in dogs with Cardiomegaly (EPIC)
Understanding murmurs
Managing client expectations and vet/owner co-operation to maximise quality of life in chronic cases
Who is it for?
Small animal practitioners with an interest in improving their approach to cardiology cases in cats and dogs.
