A two day course aimed at providing delegates with key information and skills needed to practise as a vet in the UK and essential communication skills.

Day one - key information and skills needed to practise as a vet in the UK
BVA in association with RCVS and VDS

By the end of the course delegates will

Have an understanding of the main UK veterinary bodies and their roles
Be aware of the Code of Professional Conduct under which they need to practise in the UK
Know what happens if a complaint is made against them and where they can go for help
Understand their requirements in terms of keeping up-to-date with their veterinary training
Know where to look for jobs and gain a useful advantage when writing their CV and in the interview process
Gain insight into contracts of employment and what they are entitled to receive when employed in the UK
Be more confident communicating with clients and colleagues
Take away useful tips from an overseas vet with significant experience of working in the UK
Have gained five hours’ CPD points and be able to list the course on their CV

By the end of the course delegates will

Be better able to deal with the unique challenges practitioners face when
consulting in the UK
Understand the elements of the ‘veterinary consultation’
Receive constructive, objective feedback on their consultation technique
Have had the opportunity to practise their skills with role players
Learn techniques to defuse difficult situations
Develop or refine useful practical skills
Have more confidence when dealing with clients and colleagues
Have had the opportunity to discuss their particular questions and concerns
with experienced practitioners

The Speakers

The VetAbroad initiative is led by Luis Sainz-Pardo, MRCVS.<br /> <br /> Further details about Luis:<br /> <br /> Luis graduated in Spain as a Veterinary Surgeon in 1993.<br /> Immediately after graduation travelled to the UK.<br /> He was assistant veterinary surgeon for two practices until 1998, when he bought Beechwood Veterinary Practice (Kidsgrove, Stoke-on-Trent).<br /> Under Luis’ ownership, Beechwood was one of the first UK practices to be awarded BSAVA standards.<br /> In 2002 Luis obtained the ESVPS GPCert(SAP).<br /> In 2004 Beechwood was accredited Tier 2 standard by the RCVS.<br /> In November 2007 Luis returned to Spain where he has been instructional designer and tutor of several e-learning practice management courses developed for, and sold in, the UK and that have been translated into four other languages.<br /> Luis has also been working as consultant for a Spanish veterinary corporation and also works as a freelance surgeon for several practices in Spain.
