Component 1: What is evidence-based veterinary medicine and why is it important?
This is designed as an introductory session to give delegates an overview of what evidence-based veterinary medicine is and why it is important. Delegates will be able to complete a self-assessment exercise to determine their knowledge prior to starting the course. Delegates will be able to use the knowledge gained in the course to think about how the principles of evidence-based veterinary medicine can be integrated into their own environment, with support from course tutors. The course will be a combination of directed online learning, with a real-time online tutorial.

Topics included will be:
• What evidence-based veterinary medicine is
• Why it is important for evidence-based veterinary medicine principles to be integrated into veterinary practice
• What the steps within the evidence-based veterinary medicine cycle are
• What preparation individuals can do prior to integrating evidence-based veterinary medicine principles into their practice

Anticipated time commitments:
Directed online learning – 5 hrs
Online tutorial – 1.5 hrs
Completion of delegate task – 0.5 hrs

Component 2: How do I find and appraise the evidence?
In order to practice evidence-based veterinary medicine, we need to be able to find, understand and appraise the evidence that is available to us. This part of the course gives a very practical approach to finding and appraising evidence, and will provide the skills needed to answer real-world, clinical questions relevant to daily veterinary work. The knowledge and skills gained will serve delegates throughout their whole careers and can be taken back to the workplace and shared with others. This component of the course will be a 2 day in person workshop and will ensure the evidence-based approach is both achievable and time efficient.

Topics included will be:
• Deciding what clinical question to ask
• How to formulate and structure a clinical question
• Recognising and understanding the different sources of evidence that are available
• Where to search effectively for the evidence with the resources available to you
• How to critically read evidence and appraise it
• Deciding whether to use the evidence to make a change in practice

Anticipated time commitments:
Preparatory work – 2 hrs
In-person 2-day workshop – 14 hrs
Completion of delegate task – 4 hrs

Component 3: How do I apply the evidence-based veterinary medicine approach to my practice?

This part of the course is focused on how delegates can apply some of the principles and skills of evidence-based veterinary medicine in their workplace – it is about making evidence-based veterinary medicine a practical reality. This can be one of the most challenging, yet satisfying, aspects of evidence-based veterinary medicine as it is about changing the way we, and our colleagues, do something or introduce something new. This is vital if we are to improve patient care and job satisfaction. This part of evidence-based veterinary medicine also involves measuring any impact of changes made in the workplace. This component will be a mixture of directed online learning, using pre-prepared resources by the CEVM team, as well as a real-time online tutorial.
Topics included will be:
• The challenges of changing practice and culture
• Leadership and motivation for yourself and colleagues
• The potential of how using EVM can improve job satisfaction and well being
• How to measure the effects of what we do
• Demystifying and understanding clinical audit and practice based research
• How to write an effective action plan

Anticipated time commitments:
Directed online learning – 5 hrs
Online tutorial – 2 hrs
Completion of delegate task – 1 hr
