Emergency and critical care nurses require a high level of practical competence to support critically ill patients and assist the veterinary team during emergency procedures. This hands-on course is designed to develop the technical skills and confidence required to perform CPR, and place and manage the tubes, drains and lines commonly used in emergency and critical care practice.
A combination of focused theory, dry-lab exercises and cadaver-based practical sessions will be used throughout the day. You will review current approaches to veterinary CPR before working as part of a team to practise basic and advanced life support in a simulated emergency.
Practical stations will focus on the patient and equipment preparation, placement and securing of a range of emergency devices including central venous catheter placement, tracheostomy tubes, thoracostomy drains, nasogastric tubes and oesophagostomy tubes. You’ll also perform the placement of nasal oxygen cannulas and transtracheal oxygen catheters, alongside the suturing techniques required to secure these devices safely and effectively.
Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on correct technique, patient safety, troubleshooting and the veterinary nurse's role in supporting emergency and critical care procedures. By the end of the course, you’ll have gained practical experience in the core procedural skills expected of an emergency and critical care veterinary nurse and will be more confident assisting with emergency interventions in clinical practice.
