Surgery in birds is not simple, the outcome can be less than desired, but it can be done and it can be done well!Surgical intervention is frequently required for avian patients but is something that many veterinarians shy away from, citing the small size of the patient and probability of a poor outcome as their reason for not offering this service to their clients. Surgery in birds is not simple, the outcome can be less than desired, but it can be done and it can be done well!This course aims to teach practitioners the indications for surgery and give them the information needed to better prepare for, plan and perform a surgical procedure. Common approaches and techniques for both soft tissue and orthopaedic procedures are described. Post-operative care is discussed to ensure that the best possible outcomes are achieved.

The Speakers

Bob Doneley (BVSc FANZCVS (Avian Medicine) CMAVA) is an Associate Professor in Avian and Exotic Pet Medicine at the University of Queensland. After graduating from UQ in 1982 and working as an associate in practices in Queensland and the UK, Bob opened his own practice in 1988. He obtained his Membership of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in 1991 and his Fellowship in 2003. He sold his practice in 2010 to lead the newly relocated UQ Veterinary Medical Centre small animal hospital in Gatton. He is now Head of the Avian and Exotic Pet Service.Bob is the author of Avian Medicine and Surgery in Practice, as well as numerous papers and book chapters on avian and exotic pet medicine. He is in demand as a speaker at veterinary conferences, having been the invited speaker at conferences around Australia and in the US, Spain and Singapore. In 2018 he was named the TJ Lafeber Avian Practitioner of the Year by the Association of Avian Veterinarians.
