With all-new material for Autumn 2023, the University of Liverpool is delighted to present a more specialised mini module on Equine Dentistry, providing 25 hours of CPD in a flexible, remote learning environment.

The Equine Dentistry module is aimed at more experienced practitioners working in the field of Equine Dentistry including those of you with either CertAVP(ED) or Advanced Practitioner Status. These modules are a great way to support your CPD requirements for the year and for those who have completed a CertAVP or are an Advanced Practitioner in Equine Dentistry or Equine Practice, these modules will help maintain your Advanced Practitioner status.

These 100% online modules will provide you with 25 hours of designated specific CPD. Over 4 weeks this mini module will cover a different topic each week in an area in which there may have been changes, advances or controversies. The course is taught and tutored by University of Liverpool and external veterinary specialists with recorded lectures, readings, MCQ’s and 2 cased based interactive Zoom meetings.



Course content:


Week 1: 19 February 2024

Anaesthesia / Analgesia

Speakers: Justine Kane Smyth and Alison Bennell

Dentistry and surgery of the head are increasingly performed standing thanks to advances in sedative and anaesthesia techniques. The week will review the strategies and approaches to maximise patient compliance and outcomes by utilising multimodal analgesia.



Week 2: 26 February 2024

Dental Imaging

Speakers: Rhiannon Morgan & Gabriel Manso-Diaz

This week’s lectures provide a refresher on the basic radiographic anatomy and technique, as well as the main features of the most common diseases of the teeth and paranasal sinuses in horses from a practical point of view followed by a look at advanced imaging of the head, concentrating mainly on computed tomography with some magnetic resonance imaging, and comparisons to head radiography.

A case-based Zoom meeting on Thursday 16th November 2023 at 7.30pm will provide the opportunity to interact with Rhiannon and Gabriel



Week 3: Break Week



Week 4: 11 March 2024

Sinus Surgery

Speaker: Henry Tremaine

This week will take a look at the indications for sinus surgery with a thorough approach to pre-operative workup to identify the cases that would most benefit from sinus surgery and to assist surgical planning followed by the techniques available for surgery of the paranasal sinuses with some advantages and disadvantages, including preparation, restraint and post-operative management.



Week 5: 18 March 2024

Post-surgical Complications

Speakers: Henry Tremaine & Alex Gillen

Henry Tremaine and Alex Gillen will discuss a variety of potential complications following sinus surgery for dental-related conditions. Subjects discussed include: management of dental fragments within the sinuses, recognising and managing suture exostosis, managing breakdown of the surgical site and surgical site infection, treatment of post-operative sinusitis, management of fistulae, diagnosis and management of iatrogenic fractures, diagnosis and management of iatrogenic nerve damage. Alex will host a case-based Zoom meeting providing a great opportunity to discuss cases with Alex and your colleagues.
