This 100% online CPD mini-module has been developed and aimed towards the more experienced veterinary surgeon. The module content has been developed by veterinary specialists at the forefront of current veterinary research.

The module will provide you with 25 hours of designation specific CPD. Over four weeks we will cover a different weekly topic in an area in which there may have been changes, advances or controversy in recent years.

The course is taught and tutored by Liverpool and other external veterinary specialists, following a similar format to the University of Liverpool’s CertAVP modules. With online lectures, discussion boards and weekly MCQ tests designed to help support your learning, this short Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care mini-module will provide a fun and interactive way to ensure you keep up to date in your area of interest.



Course content:


Week 1: 27 February 2023

Diagnostic Imaging in Emergency and Critical Care

Speaker: Frederike Schiborra Dr. med. vet., DipECVDI , MRCVS

With all-new learning material, new cases to critique, and a friendly group online discussion session, Frederike’s interactive teaching style will help develop your skills in diagnostic imaging in the ECC context.



Week 2: 6 March 2023

Emergency and Critical Care Soft Tissue Surgery

Speakers: Matteo Rossanese DVM SPSA CertAVP MSc MRCVS and Rachel Burrow BVetMed CertSAS CertVR DipECVS MRCVS RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Surgery (Soft Tissue)

Matteo and Rachel will start by presenting a series of concise lectures based on how they manage different surgical emergencies. At the end of the week Rachel will be hosting a lively interactive group session on respiratory sounds and patterns!

Week 4: 20 March 2023

Exotic Pets in Emergency and Critical Care

Speakers: Vicki Baldrey BSc(Hons) BVSc DZooMed(Avian) MRCVS and Jack MacHale BVetMed MRCVS

Back by popular demand and with all-new material, Vicki and Jack from the RVC’s exotics department will be building on last years’ exotic pet fundamentals teaching. This year Vicki and Jack will dig deeper into the various presentations, diagnostics and treatment options for exotic pets in ECC, completed at the end of the week with a live presentation by Jack.



Week 5 : 27 March 2023

Blood Gas Analysis

Speaker: Ludivine Boiron DVM, MSc, MRCVS, DACVECC

Ludivine returns this year to demystify the topic of blood gas analysis – a crucial point-of-care tool in ECC but at times challenging to interpret and use optimally. Ludivine’s lectures will discuss the fundamentals of venous and arterial blood gas analysis, capnography and pulse oximetry and will review the four major blood gas disturbances, cementing the learning with a case for discussion.
