Sunday 4 October is a special day for an important member of your household. But don’t worry, you haven’t missed Mothers Day or Valentine’s Day.
If you’re one of the 63 per cent of Australians who own pets the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is keen to remind you that it’s World Animal Day.
“World Animal Day is set aside to celebrate the importance of animals, whether they’re our pets, a working animal or just providing a source of wonder in the wild,” Dr Mark Lawrie, AVA President said.
“Companion animals in particular play a special role in keeping our lives healthier and happier. Looking after them in return is an important responsibility for pet owners.
“For our pets, cats and dogs in particular, one human year is the same as about five years in their lives. We need to make sure they have a yearly check up at the vet as most people do with their doctor.
“Your vet will check for any signs of disease, make sure their teeth, skin, ears and eyes are healthy and update you on preventative measures for problems like fleas, heartworm and intestinal worms.
“Finding any health problems early can save you time and money now and, more importantly possibly even save your pet’s life.
“Yearly check ups are usually quite quick and inexpensive and you can ask for an estimate of the cost when you call to make the appointment.
“It’s important to remember that a yearly check up is really essential as your pet gets older because, like humans, their health problems can increase as age sets in.
“It allows them to live to their full potential, which is great for both of you. “Your pet really does deserve a special day every year, and by taking them for an annual check up, you will actually be giving them two!”11424 views
