The African Small Companion Animal Network (AFSCAN), a project supported by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association's (WSAVA) Charitable Foundation (WSAVAF), has announced the recipients of the 2019 AFSCAN-BSAVA and AFSCAN-VMX Scholarships.

The 2019 AFSCAN-BSAVA International Scholarship

Kenyan veterinarian Dr Susan Kuria is the recipient of the 2019 AFSCAN-BSAVA International Scholarship.  The bursary covers her expenses to attend the 2019 BSAVA Congress which takes place from 4-7 April in Birmingham, UK.

The BSAVA International Scholarship Programme supports companion animal veterinarians from emerging countries who have been qualified for between three and seven years.  The Scholar from Africa is nominated by the AFSCAN board.

The 2019 AFSCAN-VMX Colin F. Burrows International Scholarship

Dr Willy Mwangi from the University of Nairobi in Kenya is the recipient of the 2019 AFSCAN-NAVC Scholarship.  The bursary covers his expenses to attend VMX (Veterinary Meeting & Expo, formerly the NAVC Conference) 2019, which takes place from 19-23 January in Orlando, Florida, USA.

The VMX International Scholarship Programme supports future national veterinary leaders from around the world and organizers of veterinary continuing education (CE) in their countries to attend VMX. It offers scholarships to veterinarians in three regions of the world, with the addition of Africa.  The Scholar from Africa is again nominated by the AFSCAN board.

AFSCAN advances standards of veterinary care across Africa through education and through facilitating the creation of a sustainable network of companion animal veterinarians, associations and specialist groups in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Commenting, Emeritus Professor Michael Day, member of the AFSCAN Board and the WSAVA Executive Board, said:  "Without these Scholarships it would be simply impossible for Susan and Willy to travel to BSAVA Congress or VMX 2019.  The opportunity attendance gives them to learn, to share experiences and to build relationships with colleagues from around the world will be invaluable - not just for them but for the veterinary profession in their countries.  We congratulate Susan and Willy on being announced as the 2019 AFSCAN Scholars and thank BSAVA and NAVC for their commitment to the Scholarship Programme.”

Dr Gabriel Varga, Chairman of the AFSCAN Board and Regional Director, Sub-Saharan Africa, at Zoetis, added:  said: “The WSAVA Foundation is grateful to NAVC and BSAVA for supporting the growth of the profession in Africa by offering scholarships to these future veterinary leaders.  Our AFSCAN project has already made great strides in developing the companion animal veterinary profession in Africa and we will be announcing a number of exciting new initiatives for the continent soon.”
