Alice Horne From Nottingham Veterinary School Is The BVZS Poster Competition Winner

Alice with her winning poster Alice Horne, a third year student at the Nottingham Veterinary School, has won a poster presentation competition organised by the British Veterinary Zoological Society (BVZS) during the Association’s Spring Meeting in Cambridge on 23-24 March. The competition was sponsored by Virbac and was for the best poster or presentation relating to the use of a Virbac product in a non-domesticated species. Alice’s winning poster was entitled ‘Anaesthesia of Potamochoerus porcus (Red River Hog) to remove the pedal bone on the right forelimb due to a penetrating septic infection.’ She has won a sponsorship and prize package for the next BVZS meeting, which takes place from 8-10 November at Whipsnade Zoo. Matthew Brash, President of the BVZS, commented: “Alice’s poster was judged the winner because it explored a novel, off label use of Virbac’s anaesthetic, Zoletil (tiletamine/zolazepam) in a species which is often regarded as difficult to anaesthetise. Poster presentation competitions such as these are an excellent way to help veterinary students with a keen interest in zoology to develop their knowledge. We’re grateful to Virbac for supporting our work in this way and congratulate Alice on her win. We look forward to seeing her at our next meeting in November.” Alice commented: “I am delighted to have been awarded the prize and am looking forward to the next BVZS meeting. I thoroughly enjoyed creating the poster and developing my interest and knowledge in the anaesthesia of zoo animals.”
