A team of volunteer vets and nurses providing free care to dogs at Crufts Dog Show has donated £1,150 to an emergency appeal launched by global animal welfare charity The ProSalus Foundation, to deliver life-saving medicines, equipment and financial support to veterinary teams in Ukraine.
The funds were raised through donations from dog owners who accessed the team’s on-site service during the event. The volunteer group, made up of vets and nurses from practices across the UK, ensures dogs remain healthy and safe throughout Crufts.
Veterinary teams across Ukraine are struggling to treat animals as members of the profession are being injured or killed on the battlefield, equipment is being diverted for human emergency care and animal shelters are overwhelmed. There is also increasing concern about the rise in deadly diseases, including rabies, with cases of rabies reported in 2023 2.3 times higher than in 2022. (Source: UNN)
Commenting on the donation, team member Rita Johnson RVN, said: “After learning about the challenges facing veterinary teams in Ukraine, the Crufts volunteer vet team wanted to support this appeal to help them continue their vital work.”
The ProSalus Foundation is dedicated to advancing the veterinary profession and improving animal welfare in regions of greatest need. It has launched its appeal to support veterinarians in Ukraine in partnership with the Ukrainian Veterinary Medical Foundation.
Dr Mark Johnston, Vice President of the Prosalus Foundation, said: “We were deeply moved to receive this generous donation from the volunteer vet team at Crufts. We thank them for their concern for veterinary teams in Ukraine and the millions of animals caught up in the conflict.
“We hope more vets in the UK will follow their example and help us to help our dedicated Ukrainian colleagues through these desperate times.”
UK veterinary professionals can support the campaign in three ways:
- Donate veterinary medicines, equipment and supplies – including medications, portable ultrasound machines, anaesthetic machines, surgical tables, surgical instruments and consumables.
- Make a cash donation online via The ProSalus Foundation’s website – for the purchase of medications, equipment and other supplies
- Bid in a silent auction of Ukrainian art – renowned Ukrainian artist Ann Khomchyk has donated her ‘Different Together’ collection of paintings to the campaign, with all proceeds used to support frontline Ukrainian veterinary teams.
