AWF Re-opens Fund For Sheep, Cattle And Horse Research

Following a review of its grants process the Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF) has re-opened its Norman Hayward Fund grants programme for research into the diseases and welfare of sheep, cattle and horses. Over the last six years the Fund has awarded more than £1 million to research projects in the UK. The most recently funded project was led by a team at University of Liverpool for a four-year study into Contagious Ovine Digital Dermatitis in Sheep, an under-researched but increasingly common disease which is a common cause of severe sheep lameness. The research has the potential to greatly enhance sheep welfare and this is the kind of project the Fund hopes to attract in the future. The Fund was closed to applications for a year while the review looked at making the grants process more transparent and easier for applicants to understand. Applications are now welcome from academic and practice-based researchers who can demonstrate that their proposal will have a practical impact on the welfare of sheep, cattle or horses. There is a two-stage application process starting with applicants submitting their Project Overview Form giving a brief outline of the nature and scope of the project. Trustees will then review the Overview Forms before deciding which applicants to invite to submit a full grant application.
