With the launch of the new BVDFree England Scheme last summer, the British Cattle Veterinary Association identified a need to create a training programme on the disease, that includes details of what the Scheme is all about. This was borne out when over 75% of respondents agreed that they would find it very useful to have an online training course on BVD, as part of a BCVA survey on infectious diseases last year.

‘BCVA have been working with BVD expert Dr Richard Booth and the BVDFree Group to develop a training course for vets’ explains Fiona MacGillivray, BCVA communications lead. ‘Our focus was to provide comprehensive guidance on BVD eradication, through the BCVA website, so registered vets can access the material online whenever they want to. The training consists of 4 sections and we’ve also added a challenging assessment at the end to test your knowledge!’

Members can register for the training through the website (bcva.org.uk) for £10 and non-members will have to pay £55. The Action Johne’s training course is also still available online and can be accessed in the same way.

Since its launch last July, BVDFree now has over 500 farms signed up to the Scheme and more than 11,000 results uploaded onto the national database, which can be accessed through the website bvdfree.org.uk. With over 100 organisations within the cattle industry supporting the Scheme, the BCVA is taking the lead on making sure cattle vets are raising awareness and encouraging their farmers to sign up.
