BOVA UK, the first veterinary sterile specials facility of its kind in the UK, has launched a range of specials for the Small Animal Market. This expansion follows BOVA’s success in the equine market since launching in March 2017, which has significantly enhanced treatment options for UK vets.

Pharmaceutical specials are tailored medications, produced in specific dosages and formulations to meet the particular needs of individual patients. They broaden the treatment options available to vets and their patients and can enhance compliance.

The Veterinary Medicines Regulations specify that a special can only be supplied in accordance with a written or oral prescription from a vet. It must be prescribed in line with the Cascade. The Cascade is a decision tree enabling vets to use their clinical judgment to treat animals under their care by deciding which product to use when no suitable authorised veterinary medicine is available in the UK. Specials can be ordered for a specific patient, or can be ordered and held in stock. Such stock should be clinically justifiable by the veterinarian and their case load.

Ian Battersby BVSc FRCVS DSAM DipECVIM RCVS & European Specialist in Small Animal Medicine at Davies Veterinary Specialists said: “The option to prescribe a special via the Cascade is important in certain circumstances, not only to help resolve compliance issues but also to ensure accurate dosing and assist in optimal management.”

To access an extemporaneous preparation, the vet should contact a holder of a Specials Manufacturing Authorisation (ManSA). Such holders are licensed by the VMD and have proven they are capable of preparing the specials in accordance with Good Manufacturing Principles (GMP).

Currently there are six formulations in BOVA’S small animal range with a further 23 formulations scheduled to be introduced in the first half of 2018.

You can meet the BOVA Team at BSAVA 5-8 April 2018, Stand 817 and will have a chance to win afternoon champagne tea at the Ritz!

Due to advertising restrictions, veterinarians will only be able to view BOVA’s formulation list once they have been verified as a veterinarian by the BOVA team.
