BreathEazy, a veterinary-led provider of respiratory care solutions, has launched a new podcast, Between the Reins, exploring the science and management of equine respiratory health and performance.

The first episode brings together equine veterinary surgeon Fiona Farmer, BreathEazy Director and veterinary surgeon Jon Slattery, and international event rider Harry Meade to discuss the impact respiratory health can have on performance horses, alongside the practical management of respiratory challenges in competition settings.

The episode is available to stream for free on Spotify here: https://bit.ly/between-the-reins-vet-pr

In the opening episode, the discussion focuses on the relationship between respiratory health, performance and recovery, and on how veterinary understanding can inform everyday horse management. Following a standout 2025 season that saw him rise to the top of the FEI Eventing World Athlete Rankings, Harry reflects on the value of combining traditional horsemanship with evidence-based care.

“My aim has always been to try to enable each horse to be the best that they can be,” he explains. “That means paying attention to the small details every day – their health, diet, training and environment as well as combining good horsemanship with the best and most reliable science.”

A central theme of the discussion is the effect respiratory compromise can have on equine comfort, stamina and athletic output. As obligate nasal breathers, horses may be significantly affected by even relatively minor upper or lower airway issues. Harry also shares his experience of managing respiratory challenges in top competition horses, including former five-star campaigner Away Cruising, who was diagnosed with equine asthma during his career. By identifying the issue and adapting the horse’s management, he was able to continue competing successfully at the highest level for the following eight seasons.

The episode also explores the science behind nebulisation. Jon Slattery explains how nebulisation converts liquid solutions into fine particles that can be inhaled deep into the airways, allowing therapies to act directly within the lungs. Alongside its role in administering prescribed medications, the discussion also considers how nebulisation can support broader respiratory management in horses exposed to dust, pollen and other environmental particles that may contribute to airway irritation or respiratory sensitivity. Supportive therapies such as saline can help loosen mucus and support the lungs’ natural clearance mechanisms.

Fiona Farmer, who hosts the episode, says the aim is to bridge the gap between veterinary insight and day-to-day management in the yard. “By combining veterinary knowledge with real-world experience from the top of the sport, we hope to share useful insights that riders, owners and vets can apply.”
