The British Veterinary Association (BVA) is pleased to announce Mr Derek Williams as the new non-executive Chairman of the Board and Mr Ted Chandler as Deputy Chairman, effective immediately. Mr Williams has been a BVA Board member since 2008 and brings considerable talents and expertise in business, publishing and marketing. Mr Chandler has been a Board member since 2007 and is a former president of the BVA, providing significant veterinary input. Derek Williams successfully ran a £12 million publishing business, TG Scott, for 25 years, during which time the company was a service provider to the BVA and Veterinary Record. More recently he chaired the Publications Review Group that culminated in the transferral of the Veterinary Record editorial and production processes to the BMJ Group. The BVA Board oversees the performance of the Association and is responsible for corporate and financial governance and for setting the BVA’s strategic direction. It consists of nine members, the three Officers of the BVA (President, Past-President and President-Elect), four Directors appointed by BVA Council and up to 2 non-veterinary Directors appointed by the Board. The Chairman and Deputy Chairman are elected by the Board. Commenting, Professor Bill Reilly, President of the BVA, said: “We are delighted to announce Derek Williams as the new Chairman of the BVA Board. His experience and expertise in business, marketing and publishing will be vitally important as we continue to grow our membership, expand our services and consider ways to augment traditional income streams. “Through his long association with the BVA, Derek has built up a detailed knowledge of the veterinary profession and will combine this knowledge with his skills to ensure we continue to build on the solid infrastructure established over the past six years.” Derek Williams added: “I am honoured to be chosen as the next Chairman of the BVA and look forward to the challenges ahead. I want to help the BVA stay strong in these difficult economic times by reaching out to new members and seizing new opportunities. “The BVA is already a very forward-thinking organisation and we will continue to support the needs of vets both now and in the future.”
