Also on offer and attracting a great deal of interest, was a series of masterclass seminars, delivered by Dr Finbar Mulligan, Associate Diplomat of the European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition, from the School of Veterinary Medicine at University College Dublin who discussed the latest approaches to herd health through addressing nutrition and looking at the impact on production disease. Dr Mulligan’s presentation included key benchmarking data that can be used in herd health programmes to improve health and productivity through better management of the transition cow. Focusing on body condition score analysis, negative energy balance, rumen health and calcium, trace element and antioxidant status, the presentation looked at the links with diseases such as retained placenta, infertility, lameness, mastitis, ketosis, subacute ruminal acidosis and displaced abomasum. Dr Mulligan explored the relationship between over and under conditioned cows and the relationship with negative energy balance in early lactation. Poor management of dairy cows around the transition period has far reaching consequences, not just for that lactation but also for the productivity of subsequent lactations, due to lowered conception rates and reduced milk yields. Dr Mulligan put the case for a multidisciplinary approach with the vet at the centre of the nutritional investigation. Also speaking at the event, Mike Brown, Elanco Country Director for the UK and Ireland explained that the company’s track record meant that it was set to meet five year targets to double of sales, make five major acquisitions, virtualise R&D and streamline manufacturing by the end of 2012. Elanco is now one of the top two animal health companies globally and was recently described by Lilly CEO, John C. Lechleiter as the area with the greatest growth potential. There are solid plans to enter its next phase of development within the agricultural and veterinary community and Mr Brown told the invited audience that there were five products in the development pipeline that veterinary surgeons can look forward to using within the near future. With world hunger high on the media agenda Mike described Elanco’s World Hunger initiative. The UK business has made a significant commitment to the campaign, with Elanco employees already having dedicated 800 hours to working with FareShare the UK charity supporting communities to relieve food poverty.
