Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA) is the name and "helping vets help horses" is the mission of the newly launched peak body of Australia’s horse veterinarians. A special interest group of the Australian Veterinary Association, EVA is a not for profit organisation that services the needs of nearly 870 equine veterinarians and advises upon horse health issues as a stakeholder in the equine industry. The inaugural President of EVA, Dr Barry Smyth said that the EVA is ultimately in the business of raising standards for the health care of horses. “The EVA is designed to provide practical resources for vets that will help them deliver top quality care for horses,” Dr Smyth said. “Central to this is the access we offer to members of extensive research and communication resources, as well as a range of post-graduate opportunities for continuing education. Most recently, for example, we brought in international experts to train members in the latest applications in farriery and ultrasound,” he said. “EVA membership is a mark of a veterinarians’ commitment to staying up to date, and members of the public will be able to use our website to find EVA members in their locality, or EVA members with specialist qualifications.” Dr Smyth said that while this website (www.eva.org.au) is primarily intended as a service for members of the EVA, a section is available for horse owners with information on a range of subjects including equine dentistry, toxic plants and eye problems. “Horse owners can also use the website to search for Australia’s foremost experts in the healthcare of horses.” Formerly known as the Australian Equine Veterinary Association, EVA has been launched with a new name and logo to represent a significant upgrade in services offered by the organisation.
