A veterinary surgeon in Guernsey has successfully conducted hip replacement surgery on a 10-year-old border collie, Finn, in an operation that is the first of its kind on the island.

Energetic border collie Finn was suffering from a deteriorating osteoarthritic condition, which was causing a loss of function in his front right leg. Despite medication and regular trips to a physiotherapist, Finn’s condition continued to worsen and required surgery.

Finn’s owners brought him to the expert care of Vets4Pets Guernsey St Martins, where Veterinary Surgeon and Practice Owner Dr Les Blerk conducted a successful three-hour long operation – marking the first time the procedure has ever been performed on-island.

Dr Blerk, who completed two specialist five-day training courses with Terri Schiller from BioMedtrix in Las Vegas and Canada, has since been supporting Finn with his recovery.

Working alongside Veterinary Physiotherapist Nikki Shingler on a comprehensive rehabilitation program, which included laser therapy, acupuncture and physiotherapy, Dr Blerk has used hydrotherapy to strengthen Finn’s new hip and help him to regain confidence on his legs.

Dr Les Blerk, Veterinary Surgeon and Practice Owner at Vets4Pets Guernsey St Martins, said: “It’s a fantastic feeling to have been able to help Finn. His front left hind leg hip joint had developed severe osteoarthritis and the cartilage had completely worn away from the bone. He took his first few steps in just five days after receiving his new hip implants, and is steadily improving thanks to ongoing hydrotherapy and physiotherapy at the practice. I expect he’ll be fully fit and back to his usual energetic self in under six months.

“It’s also a special moment for the island and our practice to have completed a procedure that’s never been done in Guernsey before.”

The operation has already had a positive impact on Finn’s quality of life, with the border collie now back on his feet and no longer showing symptoms of pain. His aftercare includes close monitoring alongside pain relief and a mobility course.
