Referral hospital Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists has received a special President’s Award at the British Veterinary Hospital Association’s (BHVA’s) Practice Design Awards.  The Award recognises the ‘outstanding working environment’ created at Lumbry Park, which opened in 2015 following the £4.3 refurbishment of a former industrial unit.  Part of CVS’ referrals network, it is one of the largest multi-disciplinary, state-of-the art, RCVS-accredited referral hospitals in the South of England.

The biennial BVHA Practice Design Awards, organised in conjunction with Veterinary Practice Magazine, recognise outstanding design in veterinary premises, with judges looking for flair and innovation combined with practicality and value-for-money.  According to the organisers, the number of entries received for the 2017 Awards was among the highest since the competition was launched in 1995. In view of the standard of entries received, the judges decided to offer two additional President’s Awards, with Lumbry Park receiving one for the working environment it offers.

In making the Award to Lumbry Park, the judges particularly commended novel features including the placement of comfortable rooms for owners adjacent to consulting rooms, the ‘open facilities’ where clinicians can catch up on paperwork or study and efforts to create of a ‘water-cooler atmosphere throughout’ to enable spontaneous conversations to take place.  The ‘excellent’ layout of surgical facilities, staff facilities and attention to detail throughout were also noted.

Commenting on the Award, Mr Ray Girotti, Hospital Director, said: “From the very first plans, the Lumbry Park team’s vision was to create a hospital in which clinicians would really want to work.  This Award shows that they have succeeded in achieving their goal.

“Two years on from our opening, we are now offering a comprehensive range of services for canine and feline patients in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dermatology, dentistry, critical care, internal medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery – and all in an environment which many of the judges said they’d like to work in themselves.  I’d like to thank everybody at Lumbry Park who has played a part in us winning the Award. It really has been a team effort and we are honoured and delighted to receive it.”

Key to its success is CVS' ability to attract friendly veterinary staff and to invest in their clinical skills, knowledge and in research to drive the profession forward.  It also provides the business support to ensure its diverse range of small animal, large animal and equine practices achieve their full potential.   CVS' guiding principles include a commitment to excellence in all aspects of its work and a focus on building long-term relationships with its customers and suppliers.  The company works in close partnership with the wider veterinary profession and industry colleagues.
