A popular veterinary referral centre in Belsize Park has been honoured with a prestigious award for its high quality of care for dogs.

Linnaeus-owned London Vet Specialists (LVS) has received Dog Friendly Clinic accreditation by Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and the British Veterinary Behaviour Association (BVBA).

Registered veterinary nurse Jessica Atkins, also business relations manager and dog advocate at LVS, said: “I’m delighted that LVS has been recognised by Dogs Trust as a dog-friendly practice.

“I have drawn on my experience working with dogs and knowledge from my behavioural qualifications to ensure we are able to offer the lowest stress hospital visits possible for our canine patients.

“This scheme by Dogs Trust has provided us with a framework to be able to ensure our team are trained to understand dog behaviours and how we can cater to their species-specific needs, along with creating an environment that benefits our patients, their carers and our team.”

Rachel Casey, head of canine behaviour and research at Dogs Trust, said: “Veterinary care is an essential part of dogs’ lives, but some find visits to the vets stressful.

“We are very pleased to collaborate with the BVBA to create the Dog Friendly Clinic scheme to help veterinary practices embed the principles of behavioural medicine into clinic life.

“Vet clinics are at the forefront of recognising and preventing the development of problem behaviours in dogs, and this scheme will help them develop the skills and knowledge to optimise the wellbeing of the dogs in their care.”

Chris Laurence, chair of BVBA, said: “Encouraging welfare-friendly treatment of dogs in veterinary practices is one of our primary objectives so every additional practice means many more dogs will benefit.

“We’re delighted London Vet Specialists has joined our dog friendly community. By doing so, they are helping ensure every dog has as positive an experience as possible within their clinic.”

London Vet Specialists, LVS, which is moving to a new state-of-the-art £8 million hospital in Hammersmith next year, is the only centre in London to offer a dedicated multidisciplinary vet-referral service delivering an outstanding level of care to London’s pets and their owners, and unrivalled support to the Capital’s primary clinicians.
