Medivet has announced the winners of a competition among fifth year veterinary students who have undertaken EMS placements at the company’s practices across the UK. The company offered a monetary prize and a certificate for the best case study of a patient the student saw during their EMS period. In writing the case study, they were asked to reflect on what the case taught them. Did it for instance, alert them to new therapeutic possibilities or spark their interest in developing a particular speciality?

Nicole Pitulia won the prize at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Her case study covered a complex dental case in a Cocker Spaniel. The dog had stopped eating dry food and dental radiography revealed severe tissue destruction and alveolar bone resorption. She said: “I definitely now see myself approaching dental cases differently and the importance of radiography in particular was highlighted with this patient.”

Isabelle Sach won the prize at the Royal Veterinary College in London for a case study describing a TPLO surgery in a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The key learning for her was how to react as the responsible surgeon when complications happen during a procedure. As a result, she is now hoping to study for a Certificate in either orthopaedic or soft tissue surgery.

Commenting on the competition, Head of Vet Development & Future Vet Recruitment for Medivet, Dr Daniel Preter said: “Our practices welcome around 150 EMS students with the number increasing every year. We wanted to encourage them to reflect on the more interesting or challenging cases they worked on during their time with us in order to maximise the learning opportunity. We also wanted to thank them for the contribution they made to our teams during their time with us.  The competition seemed a good way to achieve both.”

He added: “Our Clinical Committee selected the winning case studies and commended both on the thorough write up and the clear understanding of the relevance of these cases in first opinion practice.”

The prizes were presented to Nicole Pitulia and Isabelle Sach during their graduation ceremonies on 29 June and 5 July respectively. A prize will also be presented to the winning student from Nottingham University Vet School in September.
