An engaging interactive webpage has been set up to highlight the dangers of leaving dogs in hot cars as part of a ‘Pets in Summer’ awareness campaign by Animal Friends Pet Insurance.

The site includes a quick-look guide to the effect of exterior heat on the temperature inside a car, as well as information on the effect heat has on various types of dog. There is also a quiz, to help pet owners test their knowledge on this vitally important issue. The site can be seen here.

Many owners do not realise the consequences of leaving dogs in hot cars for even short lengths of time. Overheating can result in permanent brain damage, or even death. If reported, the dog could be seized by police and rehomed and the owner prosecuted.

Throughout June and July Animal Friends will be running a ‘Pets in Summer’ awareness campaign, publishing guides and articles to help pets and the people who love them survive the summer. Topics covered will include issues like sunstroke, dehydration, travel and finding the right kennel or cattery for your pets.

Founder and MD Elaine Fairfax said: “Here at Animal Friends we are dedicated to raising awareness of issues such as this, where animal suffering is entirely avoidable. It’s tragic that dogs suffer and die every year due to a lack of understanding.”
