Northwest Veterinary Specialists (NWVS) has appointed three specialists to join the expanding teams at the Cheshire-based specialist referral centre.

Nick Macdonald and Turlough O’Neill have joined the orthopaedic specialist team, whilst Perrine Benmansour has joined the anaesthetic and pain management team to support major expansion of the services being offered.

The referral centre has recently undergone significant expansion, and these appointments continue the major investment into the leading veterinary hospital’s facilities and people.

Liz Cousins, hospital manager at Northwest Veterinary Specialists, said: “It’s brilliant to be able to attract Nick, Turlough and Perrine who have all achieved a wealth of clinical experience in the UK and internationally.

“Nick and Turlough are both particularly interested in arthroscopy and how technology is used for orthopaedic treatment, while Perrine has particular interests in cardiovascular physiology, pain management and workflow efficiency.”

Turlough qualified from the University of Dublin in 1987 and spent two years working in mixed practice in Ireland. In 1989, he moved to Australia, working at various hospitals, before returning to the UK as a lecturer at the University of Liverpool.

He holds a Royal College Certificate in small animal surgery and the European Diploma in small animal surgery.

“Northwest Veterinary Specialists has a strong reputation of being the ultimate referral practice in the veterinary profession and we are always looking into new developments,” said Turlough

“I’m really looking forward to helping pets and working with an exceptional team.”

Nick graduated from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in 1999 and went on to complete two internships at the University of Glasgow and Davies Veterinary Specialists.

After spending two years working at the PDSA, Nick spent some time teaching at the University of Liverpool, before going on to complete a specialist residency in small animal surgery.

He has since headed the orthopaedics department at a private referral practice. In 2012, Nick became Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons.

“It’s fantastic to join a leading veterinary hospital with an outstanding reputation and state-of-the-art facilities,” said Nick.

“I’m pleased to be part of the growing team here and look forward to growing the orthopaedic department with my colleagues.”

Perrine graduated from the University of Liege, Belgium in 2007. Her first internship was in small animals at the University of Nantes, France and she then went on to complete an internship in small animal anaesthesia at the University of Liverpool.

Three years in Canada followed to complete her residency and a Master of Veterinary Sciences at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine.

In her career, Perrine has worked with large animals including lions, bears, wolves, caribous and even giraffes. She achieved her European Diploma in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia in 2014, and has worked in busy small animal specialist referral centres, providing workflow management and a pain management service.

“I lived close to the hospital during my internship in Liverpool; it’s impressive to see how much NWVS has grown and I’m extremely proud to be part of the team.”
