‘One Medicine’ Theme Announced For BEVA Congress 2024

BEVA Congress 2024 is embracing the theme of ‘one medicine’ this year to highlight the important links and knowledge sharing between human and equine medicine.
The event will be held from 11-14 September 2024, at the ACC in Liverpool. The full BEVA Congress programme is now live and super early bird tickets are available from 4 March, saving member delegates up to £200.
This one medicine thread will run through the medicine and orthopaedics and sports medicine streams as well as feature in the Peter Rossdale Plenary Lecture. It is the idea of BEVA President Roger Smith, who as a research specialist in equine orthopaedics, has benefited greatly from interaction with the human medical field.
“There is much to learn from the human side as well as from what we do as vets,” said Roger Smith. “We have invited five human medical experts to make some comparative links with human medicine in their presentations. Bringing a different angle in this way will help predict what the future holds and advance what we do in the equine veterinary sphere.”
BEVA Congress is uniquely produced by horse vets for horse vets. The congress committee, chaired this year by Michaël Schramme, has crafted a pertinent and practical programme to appeal to every member of the equine veterinary profession.
Using formal presentations, interactive discussion, debates and workshops, speakers will present the best available evidence on their allocated topics thereby appealing to every level, from new graduates to senior partners.
Michaël Schramme, Committee Chair said: “We have seven streams to the programme, with a guardian assigned to each one; orthopaedics and sports medicine will be overseen by BEVA Vice President Bruce Bladon and Peter Clegg from the University of Liverpool, while Internal Medicine is in the hands of the one and only Derek Knottenbelt - I don’t think there’s anybody who knows more about internal medicine!”
Camilla Scott from Rossdales will oversee the reproduction stream while anaesthesia and imaging have Jane Boswell from Liphook at the helm. Tim Barnett from Rossdale's will head up the dentistry and current affairs streams, Simon Curtis will look after the farriery stream and Marie Rippingale will lead the nursing stream.
The final touches are being made to the full programme, which includes more than 90 hours of live and on-demand CPD covering almost every aspect of equine medicine, surgery and practice.
The first day will commence with an opening address from Olympic gold medallist Sally Gunnell during which she will share her thoughts on maximising performance.
Other highlights throughout the three days of Congress include:
John Hickman Memorial Lecture Dean Richardson, Professor of Equine Surgery, University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and Chief, Large Animal Surgery, University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, will be flying in from the US to share his considerable knowledge of equine fracture management.
Peter Rossdale Memorial Lecture will see Professor Andy Carr, a research-active orthopaedic surgeon in human medicine at Oxford University, discussing the evidence-base for the treatment of tendinopathy.
An expanded stream for veterinary nurses will include a critical care workshop, practicals on bandaging, casting and suturing and a session on neurodiversity in practice.
Farriers will have their own separate stream on the Saturday, with a balance of practical and clinical content.
The exhibition hall is already more than 65% full, with some of the industry’s leading suppliers and referral practices having secured their space well in advance. It presents a perfect opportunity to meet the major players in the equine sector face-to-face, network for both business and career opportunities and find out about new products and innovations as they hit the market.
The legendary BEVA Congress social scene kicks off with the Welcome Reception on the Wednesday night as usual, followed by the Annual Dinner on the Friday. Happy Hours will help with the daily wind-down in the exhibition hall on Thursday and Friday and for the keep-fit fans, RunBEVA will be happening on Thursday and Friday morning.
Super early bird tickets for BEVA Congress are available now. Tickets provide access to all lecture exhibition halls as well as full access to the virtual congress hub. Delegates will have access to all Congress content for six months after the event via the hub.
Individual super early bird BEVA members prices are £524 for vets and £144 for vet nurses for all three days (with concessionary available for those in their first three years of graduation or earning less than £25,000). Day tickets and practice passes are also available. Super early bird ends on Wednesday 29 May 2024.
