A concentrated premium quality vitamin and trace element supplement for lambs and sheep
Ian Bell from Hallbankgate Farm near Brampton in Cumbria is the Farmers Guardian/NBA Beef Stockman of the Future 2012 and was awarded the Frank Momber memorial trophy at the Beef Expo Dinner.
Ian was one of the three farmers shortlisted for the 2012 Beef Stockman of the Future and his management of the family’s 222 hectare holding, which is mostly owner-occupied, impressed the judging panel on their recent visit. Married to Sophie with two children, Rachel, 11, and Thomas, 9, he spent time working in a local auction mart before taking over the running of the farm and acquired valuable knowledge from fellow producers during that time. That knowledge, which he continues to develop, underpins his current strategy and management of the farm business.
One of the judges, Philip Dale (NBA cattle health committee chairman and a farm manager) said, “I was impressed with the quality and health status of Ian’s stock. He showed innovation in terms of what he had done with the buildings and the grassland”
“He should also be commended for his flexible approach to marketing on both the commercial and pedigree side of the business and is continually looking to improve his system.”
The unit runs 100 commercial suckler cows and 30 pedigree ‘Hallbankgate’ Charolais, plus 700 breeding ewes; mainly first cross texel out of a mule.
He explains, “We aim to produce top quality lambs, and finish them off grass, which keeps cost down and improves profit margins. We have found that using Downland Optigain Forte drench at six weeks old, and then again at weaning means the lambs fatten an awful lot quicker off grass”
