Medivet’s in-house blood donation service, Vet Blood, has been boosted by the arrival of a state-of-the-art vehicle, equipped with the latest technology to enable it to process, store and freeze blood products and to then deliver them to practices across the UK 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

To mark its arrival, a Donor Day was held at Medivet Welwyn Garden City on Saturday 11 August. Eight dogs gave blood, including greyhound Tommy, already a donor for Medivet, and his sister, Misty, owned by Mr and Mrs Brooks from Welwyn. All participating dogs had a full blood profile and Packed Cell Volume test, as well as a clinical examination before making their donation.

Medivet Welwyn Garden City Head Nurse, Ms Natalie White said: “Our Vet Blood Service relies on the support of our clients and their wonderful dogs so, in return, we support them with free medical checks, blood tests, vaccinations and anti-parasite treatment. All participating dogs also have to pass our rigorous registration programme. We are so proud of our fantastic canine blood donors yesterday. Tommy led by example but the rest were first timers and they were all well-behaved and very relaxed. We’d like to say a big thank you to them and to their owners.”

Mrs Denise Turner, Vet Blood Manager at Medivet, added: “When veterinary teams need blood or blood products, they invariably need them urgently and our new vehicle will significantly enhance our capability to process and deliver supplies quickly to our growing family of practices and to other practices. It will also enable us to travel to more Donor Days like the one at Welwyn Garden City.

“The vehicle has been fully customised to meet the needs of our Vet Blood team and marks an exciting step in the level of service we can offer to veterinary practices. We are looking forward to working with them to set up regular Donor Days and to delivering the blood products they need in time to help them carry out life-saving procedures.”

Medivet is an independently owned community of 250 veterinary practices and 15 fully staffed 24-hour veterinary centres across the UK, of which 11 are 24-hour veterinary hospitals. Underpinned by its partnership ethos, it is forging a national community of partner-run practices, offering exceptional veterinary care to patients all under one roof.
