UK VET GROUP BECOMES CARBON NEUTRAL

Vets4Pets and Companion Care practices across the UK are now carbon neutral, following a sustained green initiative.
As part of the Pets at Home Vet Group, the 449 veterinary practices, along with 445 Pets at Home retail stores, Support Offices and distribution centres, are now sourcing green renewable electricity and purchasing Gold Standard emission reductions to offset carbon generated through gas consumption.
As a result, they are effectively emitting zero carbon emissions during operations, saving approximately 31,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions from electricity consumption every year, across the group.
This recent initiative is one of many green solutions implemented throughout the Group - it has recently installed LED lighting and a Building Energy Management System in all Pets at Home stores.
“Not only have we reduced overall carbon emissions, but by purchasing green electricity and offsetting carbon emissions from gas consumption, we are taking full responsibility for the carbon impact of our practice operations,” said Julie Ross, commercial director at Pets at Home Vet Group.
“In addition, by working with Climate and Development experts ClimateCare, the group has offset CO2 through world-leading projects that not only cut carbon, but also deliver significant societal benefits, linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
“As a result, the projects supported are improving life for families in some of the poorest countries in the world, and those most affected by climate change.
“The purchase of high quality carbon offsets for our gas usage means we’re helping tackle climate change, whilst also helping those in need.
“For example, in Kenya, more than 60% of household energy comes from open fires, which are usually burnt inside people’s houses in order to cook food.
“One project we support provides families with a new, more efficient cookstove. This significantly reduces carbon emissions, saves families money on fuel and cuts the toxic indoor air pollution that women and young children are exposed to.
“We are excited to be one of the greenest pet and veterinary organisations in the world and will continue to strive to be the most green and responsible organisation we can be.”
