The British Veterinary Association and The Webinar Vet joined forces again this week to deliver an informative and thought-provoking webinar on welfare at slaughter. Aimed at veterinary surgeons, the webinar was delivered by Professor Bill Reilly, former president of the BVA and a public health expert, under the title “Out of Sight: Out of Mind? Do we care about welfare at slaughter?” Professor Reilly talked attendees through the slaughter process and focused on the contentious issue of slaughter without stunning – currently practised in the UK and Europe for religious purposes. The webinar followed Professor Reilly’s Viewpoint article in the Veterinary Record, which generated a huge amount of national media interest in the issue and led to questions in the House of Commons. 300 attendees joined the webinar to hear the latest statistics on the scale of slaughter without stunning in the UK and the international situation. Professor Reilly also raised the question of what the veterinary profession should be doing to improve welfare at slaughter and highlighted the upcoming consultations across the UK on new slaughter regulations. The webinar is part of a series of webinars on policy issues provided by the BVA and hosted by The Webinar Vet. In March BVA Past President Harvey Locke delivered a webinar on the role of vets in tackling pedigree dog health and welfare problems. Professor Reilly’s webinar is now available to watch on vets.tv at http://www.bva.co.uk/vetsTv/2897.aspx.
