Alex Cooper from Fenton Vets will speak of the challenges faced with cryptosporidiosis and the changes to overcome these issues
Vets To Gain Practical Insights On Cryptosporidiosis Control
Leading farm animal vets and a Welsh dairy farmer are joining forces on Tuesday 12th May to deliver an exclusive webinar for vets tackling the practical realities of vaccinating against Cryptosporidium parvum, now the most common cause of infectious scour in UK calves¹.
The webinar, ‘Making Cryptosporidiosis Vaccination Work on Farm: Practical Insights for Vets’, will focus on how vaccination programmes can be successfully integrated into dairy herds.
The hour-long session, hosted by MSD Animal Health through The Webinar Vet, will explore how the five-point cryptosporidiosis control plan can guide client discussions, how extended colostrum feeding can be implemented on-farm, and practical strategies covering hygiene, transition milk, and wider scour control.
Vet Alex Cooper from Fenton Vets and his client, dairy farmer Lottie Wilson from Mountain Park Farm, Pembrokeshire, will provide an honest account of the challenges they faced with cryptosporidiosis and how they implemented management changes to overcome these issues, resulting in a herd now largely free from scour.
Mountain Park Farm, with a herd of approximately 340 Holstein cows calving year-round, has introduced Bovilis Cryptium® alongside enhanced colostrum management, extended transition milk feeding, and strict hygiene protocols. Since adopting this approach, the farm has seen a marked reduction in scour, improved calf growth rates, and reduced reliance on antibiotics.
“Vaccination plays a crucial role in controlling cryptosporidiosis, and strong vaccine sales reflect the clear demand for effective on-farm solutions,” says Dr Kat Baxter-Smith, Veterinary Advisor at MSD Animal Health. “On dairy farms in particular, questions often arise around how the vaccine can be implemented in practice, especially in relation to colostrum management, timing of vaccination and use in herds with Johne’s disease.
“This webinar will explore those challenges, share the latest research and provide first-hand farm experience to help vets move scour management from reactive treatment to proactive prevention,” she adds.
The session will end with a Q&A, giving attendees the opportunity to explore specific scenarios and challenges from their own practice.
