VMG Launches ‘Strategic Planning’ Microburst Series To Address Leadership Knowledge Gaps
The Veterinary Management Group (VMG) has announced the launch of a new series of ‘microburst’ webinars designed to fill knowledge gaps identified in its inaugural annual report into ‘The State of Veterinary Leadership’. The first microburst will focus on Strategic Planning, one of the least understood areas cited by respondents to the VMG that formed the basis of the report.
The Strategic Planning microburst will be delivered in three concise, interactive modules:
- Strategic Analysis: Understanding the 'why' of strategy and using simple tools to assess strategic position (31 October)
- Strategic Planning: Determining the correct strategic direction to take (28 November)
- Strategy Implementation: Putting the plan into action and tracking progress (19 December)
Each session will be led by VMG Director Chris White, founder of Mongrel Consulting/Pawsitive People, a provider of training, mentoring, and leadership development for veterinary practices. Each live module will run for one hour, with recordings available on the VMG’s Youtube channel for those unable to attend live.
The State of Veterinary Leadership report, launched at VMG’s 2024 Congress, is based on responses from 413 veterinary leaders who participated in a self-assessment survey that accompanies the VMG’s Veterinary Leadership Standards Framework. The findings revealed that 34% of respondents rated their leadership knowledge and skills as ‘basic,’ with only 1% describing their expertise as ‘excellent.’
In response, VMG has committed to collaborating across the sector to close these knowledge gaps and raise veterinary leadership standards over the next five years. The microburst series is a key initiative in this effort, offering targeted, accessible training to help veterinary leaders enhance their skills.
Commenting on the new series, Chris White said: “A well-crafted strategic plan is essential to guide your practice toward long-term success, sustained growth, and profitability. Every practice is unique, so your plan should reflect your current position and specific goals. During the webinars, I’ll break down the fundamentals of strategic analysis and planning, providing practical tools to benchmark where your practice is now and create a roadmap to help get it where you want it to be.”
The VMG is the professional association for all those in leadership and management roles in the veterinary sector. It empowers and equips veterinary leaders and their organisations to learn, share, and grow. The VMG Award, Certificate and Diploma in Veterinary Leadership and Management are modular qualifications with an emphasis on flexibility, accessibility, and real-world relevance.
