SPANA (the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad) was among the winners at the Charity Film Awards 2022 this week (22 March). The global working animal charity received a People’s Choice Award, after gaining the most votes in a public vote. SPANA also collected a Bronze Award from the Charity Film Awards’ panel of judges.

SPANA’s film, ‘International Working Animal Day 2020’, was produced to raise awareness of the daily difficulties faced by working animals (including horses, donkeys and camels) and the essential role these working animals play in many of the world’s poorest communities.

Worldwide, there are estimated to be more than 200 million working animals in low-income countries. These animals do the jobs of trucks, tractors and taxis, and enable poverty-stricken families to earn a small income by transporting food, water, good and firewood. However, working animals often have short and difficult lives, working in extreme conditions, with no available veterinary care when they are sick or injured.

SPANA works to transform the lives of working animals across the world, through global activities that include the provision of free veterinary treatment, the training for owners in animal care and the teaching of animal welfare for children.

David Bassom, Director of Global Fundraising, Marketing and Communications at SPANA, said: ‘SPANA is honoured to have its work recognised at the 2022 Charity Film Awards. We are tremendously grateful to everyone who voted for our film – it is entirely thanks to support from the public that we’ve received a People’s Choice Award.

‘We hope that our win at this year’s Charity Film Awards will help create greater awareness of the plight of working animals and will also grow support for SPANA’s vital work. Demand for SPANA’s help has never been greater and we are dependent on the kindness of our supporters to ensure we can continue to be there for working animals in desperate need.’

SPANA will be marking its centenary in 2023. The charity was founded in 1923 by British mother and daughter, Kate and Nina Hosali, who travelled across North Africa in the early 1920s and were struck by the immense suffering endured by working animals. Last year, SPANA provided free veterinary treatment to more than 283,000 working animals in 28 low-income countries.
