A group of colleagues from Vets4Pets York has raised £185 for Cancer Research UK after they successfully completed the Shine Night Walk.

Helen Trory, practice owner and veterinary surgeon at Vets4Pets York, set off from Rowntree Park at 7pm on the 1st October alongside her colleagues Rosie Cascone and Faith Milnes. Together they walked 10km through the centre of York – passing some of the city’s famous landmarks including Clifford’s Tower, York Minster and the Yorkshire Museum – to raise much needed funds for the charity.

The event, which attracts more than 1,200 people every year, sees participants make their way through the city with lights, glow sticks and torches to light up the streets.

Helen Trory said: “I’m thrilled to have completed the walk and raised money for such a good cause in the process. It’s a lovely event for a charity that’s really close to our hearts. Some of our team have family and friends who have been affected by cancer and know first-hand the impact it can have, so Cancer Research UK was always going to be a charity we’d support.

“I also thought it would be a good way for our team to get together, outside of the practice, and we really enjoyed getting to see our lovely city in the dark. It’s been a goal of mine to take part in the Shine Night Walk as a team since we opened eight years ago, and I’m glad we’ve finally managed to do it. Hopefully this will be the first of many charity walks to come.”

The fundraising initiative forms part of Pets at Home’s social value strategy, Our Better World Pledge, and supports its goal of becoming the most responsible pet care business in the world. This includes commitments to positively impact the life of every pet in the UK by 2030, enhance the lives of one million people by 2030 and to become net zero by 2040.
