The use of local anaesthetic drugs as part of a multimodal approach to analgesia is commonplace in human medicine; they reduce the time patients spend in hospital, accelerate recovery and improve patient satisfaction. Peripheral nerve blocks can be quick, simple and inexpensive to perform. Despite this, local anaesthetics are still relatively underused by the veterinary profession.
This course will cover how and when to use common peripheral nerve blocks in limbs and the head in dogs and cats; this will involve hands-on practical sessions. There will also be some case-based discussion and an opportunity for delegates to discuss their own experiences.
TOPICS TO BE COVERED INCLUDE:
How to perform common peripheral nerve blocks for use in orthopaedic, soft tissue and dental procedures
How and when to perform a lumbosacral epidural nerve block
Revision of how local anesthetic drugs work, including the complications and contraindications associated with their use
Case-based discussion – when to use the nerve blocks you’ve learnt
