Respiratory patients are commonly seen in practice, often presenting as high-risk complex cases with intensive care requirements. They can be incredibly challenging to nurse, but extremely rewarding, and allow the veterinary nurse to demonstrate a wide variety of skills. This course looks to strengthen understanding of the respiratory patient and provide practical tips on management so that nurses feel better equipped to approach these cases with confidence.
Topics to be covered include:
The common upper and lower respiratory tract disorders affecting dogs and cats
Respiratory diagnostics, including radiography and thoracic point-of-care ultrasound, arterial blood gases and bronchoscopy/BAL
Nursing care during respiratory procedures, including thoracentesis and chest drain placement
Nursing interventions for the respiratory patient including triage, monitoring, oxygen supplementation, chest drain management, tracheostomy tube placement and ventilation
Nursing care considerations for respiratory patients, including home care for chronic respiratory conditions
