This one-day practical course is suited to general practitioners with an interest in small animal surgical oncology. During the course you will learn how to work-up cases presenting with tumours of the skin and subcutis, beginning with appropriate staging, interpretation of laboratory results, discussion of treatment options, progressing to planning of surgical tumour resection with effective wound reconstruction techniques, which will be performed in the student lab.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course delegates should be able to

Plan and perform staging of small animal cases presenting with tumours of the skin and subcutis
Interpret histopathology results in order to present the most appropriate management plan for individual cases
Discuss options for adjunctive treatment, particularly in cases where tumour resection is not possible or where histopathological margins are not ‘clear’
Plan the most appropriate surgical approach for tumour resection
Perform free skin grafts, local subdermal plexus flaps and axial pattern flaps for wound closure after tumour removal. These procedures will be practised in the lab setting on cadaver material.
