A cardiology specialist at one of the UK’s leading veterinary hospitals was quick to get to the heart of a poorly puppy’s problems and carry out vital surgery.
Nine-week-old French bulldog Gigi was referred to Linnaeus-owned Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists, in Winchester, for investigations after a health check with local vets highlighted a “whooshing sound” coming from her heart.
Vet Inigo Sanz-Gonzalez took charge of the case and discovered she was suffering from pulmonary stenosis, a birth defect that affects blood flow to the heart.
The diagnosis came as a shock to owner Eve Manning, who had only had Gigi for less than a week.
Inigo, an RCVS-recognised specialist in veterinary cardiology, carried out a minimally-invasive procedure called balloon valvuloplasty. It involves inserting a catheter with a balloon on the tip through a vein in the neck or the leg up to the heart, where the balloon is dilated to help reduce the obstruction.
He said: “A pulmonary stenosis is a birth defect that causes the narrowing of the pulmonary valve affecting blood flow to the heart.
“That was the whooshing sound that the local vets had heard at Gigi’s first health check which highlights the importance of those checks.
“That meant that we were able to diagnose Gigi’s problems at a very early stage and we expect she will now go on to lead a normal life.
“She came through the surgery well, made a speedy recovery and is now really enjoying life.”
A grateful Eve was full of praises for Inigo and his expert team.
She said: “There had been no previous signs physically, she seemed in perfect health.
“Gigi is such an important girl to me, who came at the perfect time in my life; I knew she was going to need experience and expert care.
