AVA Rejects Nitschke Advice As Unethical

The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) has strongly condemned advice from euthanasia advocate Dr Philip Nitschke that people wishing to end their life should try getting drugs from veterinarians. Dr Nitschke reportedly told a forum held at Adelaide’s Flinders University that those seeking to end their life should try “twisting a vet’s arm” to obtain drugs. AVA President-elect, Dr Diane Sheehan said members of the veterinary profession find Dr Nitschke’s suggestions morally repugnant. "Veterinarians value animal and human life, and AVA Members follow a Code of Conduct which is very clear that we comply with all legislative provisions when prescribing, authorising and dispensing drugs," Dr Sheehan said. "Dr Nitschke’s suggestion is clearly illegal. Veterinary surgeons cannot provide drugs for use on humans and may only prescribe and dispense these very powerful drugs for use on animals under their care in a bona fide client relationship under state and territory drug and poisons laws. Access to and use of these drugs by inexperienced and unqualified users without suitable supervision is extremely dangerous and is strongly opposed by the veterinary profession," said Dr Sheehan. "Dr Nitschke's statement is offensive and dangerous. He has put the profession and veterinary practices at risk of being pressured by unscrupulous people seeking drugs. "The AVA advises Dr Nitschke that veterinarians are appalled by any incitement of people to place pressure on the profession in this way. As professionals, veterinarians take their ethical and legal responsibilities very seriously and strongly reject the assertions of Dr Nitschke."
