The role of teat disinfectants in mastitis control

Effective teat disinfection post-milking should be a cornerstone of mastitis control in dairy herds. Teat skin condition is important to the dairy producer because it can affect the bacterial colonization of teat skin, milk let-down, milk-out time, milking speed and parlor through put.
This presentation will give you points on:
- key performance indicators to assess the effectiveness of current teat disinfection
- how to pin-point areas of weakness in teat hygiene
- natural defenses against infection
- preservation and maintenance of healthy teat skin
- effective teat disinfection with an appropriately formulated product
Speaker: Norman Beggs
Norman qualified from UCD in 1986 and worked in mixed, mainly large animal practice before taking up a post as Veterinary Research Officer in DARD Veterinary Science Division in 2000. Working in the disease surveillance & investigation branch in Omagh, Norman has investigated mastitis outbreaks in a number of problem herds and represents AFBI on the National Mastitis group (NMG) since 2009. The NMG provides a forum for organizations involved in the diagnosis, surveillance and control of mastitis and the production of high quality milk supplies.
