BCF help out Camperdown Wildlife Park - June 12 The Radiography and extraction procedure Imaging Company BCF Technology recently helped out with a request for help with X-ray equipment from Camperdown Wildlife Park. The request was to X-ray Star, a 26 year old European Brown Bear (Ursus actos), who developed a discharging sinus beneath her lower mandible. It appeared to be non-painful and didn't resolve with medical treatment. Further investigation was needed and because of the type of animal, it was essential that radiography was carried out 'on site' while the bear was anaesthetised. Laura Stevenson and in-house vet Kimberly Palgrave from BCF attended with the Vita CR X-ray system and an X-ray generator to help out with the procedure. Alistair from Camperdown Wildlife Park commented, “The bear was anesthetised and the radiography was carried out by Laura and Kimberly from BCF who kindly set up their digital radiography system and x -ray generator so that 'instant' radiographic images could be obtained 'bear-side'! The system produced remarkable images of the bear's skull and teeth, allowing an immediate decision to be taken about the extraction of three teeth.     It was a huge benefit to all those involved since the anaesthetic time could be kept to a minimum, the affected teeth could be extracted (not the ones that were suspected as being the main cause of the problem!) and the risks to the bear's health and welfare greatly reduced.   The digital system used was truly portable and easy to use and rapidly produced good images.   Star, her keepers and veterinary surgeon are most grateful to BCF technology for their generosity, expertise and enthusiasm for being involved with this dental event! Traditional radiographic procedures would have entailed either a much longer anaesthetic time where films would have been developed 'off site' or even two separate anaesthetic occasions for diagnosis and then surgery.” Find out more about X-ray equipment from BCF by visiting our new website, www.bcftechnology.com or call us on +44(0)1506 460 023.
