SPANA is the first organisation outside America to receive the Lavin Cup, the ‘Award for Animal Welfare’, which recognises groups that work to improve equine welfare.
Founded in 1923, making it the oldest British animal charity working abroad, SPANA provides vital veterinary care to working animals in developing countries, and also offers education programmes to school children in Africa and the Middle East, teaching them about animal welfare and caring for animals. SPANA has also had several successful collaborations with Universities in the US and the UK, conducting research into some of the most challenging equine populations in the world.
Jeremy Hulme, Chief Executive at SPANA, comments: “I’m absolutely amazed and delighted at being awarded this prestigious accolade. It’s an excellent achievement and I’m really pleased all our hard work has been recognised in this way.
“It really is a credit to our teams all over the globe who work so hard for animals and the people who depend on them.”
Andrew Stringer, Veterinary Director at SPANA, adds: “This award recognises the impact that the work of SPANA is achieving around the world. It’s fantastic that we’re able to make a real difference in areas such as animal welfare, infectious disease control, veterinary education and training.”
