A Worcestershire vets practice is celebrating after receiving national recognition for its environmental work and drive to cut its carbon footprint.
Brentknoll Veterinary Centre in Worcester has been awarded bronze accreditation by Investors in the Environment (iiE), a nationwide initiative which encourages firms to introduce cleaner, more sustainable and more environmentally friendly ways of working.
Led by the practice’s dedicated green team, Linnaeus-owned Brentknoll has introduced a raft of measures aimed at reducing energy use, cutting down on waste and embracing eco-friendly practices.
Brentknoll’s practice manager Helen Peake said: “We are delighted to receive a bronze award in recognition of our efforts to be more sustainable, to reduce our carbon footprint and cut down on waste.
“We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our business and have introduced a raft of measures throughout the practice, including a new Energy Management System (EMS) to monitor usage and identify where savings can be made.
“We have introduced an improved waste management system in which the practice’s collection and separation processes now includes several streams for recycling items.
“There has also been a conscious decision to switch to eco-products such as eco- friendly toys and treats for clients and we have implemented a number of projects to enhance the environment, such as installing bird feeders, bug hotels and bee bricks, while we also participated in ‘No mow May’ last year to encourage wildlife on our grassed area.
The Brentknoll green team’s efforts have been commended by iiE’s audit, which said: “Huge congratulations to Helen and the team for their work on sustainability, and for achieving bronze level certification.
“They have created an environmental policy which identifies the key aspects of the organisation that impact the environment such as the consumption of energy and fuels, anaesthetic gases, waste generation, transport, use of raw materials and procurement of goods and services.
“This policy is clearly communicated to staff and shared with all interested parties on the practice’s website and is also included within BVC’s induction process.
“As Brentknoll expands its green team, it plans to work towards silver level accreditation by incorporating sustainability within the practice’s appraisal process, enabling staff to shape how their role supports the practice’s sustainability goals and objectives.”
