The British Veterinary Association is delighted to unveil the full programme for its most comprehensive annual event for many years, adding farm and equine clinical streams to the popular contentious issues programme of BVA Congress, at this year’s London Vet Show (LVS) on 21-22 November at London Olympia. And following its success at last year’s LVS, the BVA Careers Fair will return for a second year.
The full programme can now be downloaded at
www.bva.co.uk/londonvetshow
New for 2013 the farm and equine streams, which have been devised by BVA’s CPD Group, are aimed at mixed practitioners and recent graduates and cover subjects as diverse as:
- the 10-minute camelid consult
- the beginner’s guide to the goat
- an introduction to geriatric farm medicine
- first time on the farm
- performing a new foal check
- critical decisions on equine colic and
- equine referrals
Other topics include infectious diseases on the farm, farm animal parturition, responsible drug prescription, pet pigs, farm animal nutrition, sheep consults, battery hens, and downer cows.
Many of the farm and equine sessions are being run in association with BVA’s journal In Practice to provide a more comprehensive approach to CPD, something BVA members have called for through our member research.
BVA Congress will be hosted at London Vet Show for the first time in 2013 to widen the debate on some of the hottest topics facing the veterinary profession today. Like the farm and equine streams BVA Congress will be open to all LVS delegates to encourage everyone in the profession to listen to expert speakers and have their say on key issues including:
- Getting clients to behave – the PDSA vet Nicola Martin will talk about the challenges of changing client behaviour to achieve better results for animals and the Earl of Selborne will share some lessons from the House of Lords Inquiry into human behaviour change
- Exotic pets: is there a problem? – vets Sean Wensley and Peter Scott will debate the controversial issue of exotic pets and explore the pros and cons of exotic pet ownership
- Trust me, I’m a vet – vet Iain Richards and RCVS CEO Nick Stace consider where red tape ends and responsibility begins and question whether vets are in danger of becoming over regulated
- Ask the CVOs – the UK’s four CVOs come together in this hugely popular session to answer questions from the floor on a wide range of topics
- How many vets do we need? – Lord Trees and AVS Senior Vice President Chris Ogden explore what the future holds for the UK veterinary profession in light of the University of Surrey’s decision to open a vet school in 2014, the 8th vet school in the country
Other topics include food assurance schemes, regulation of pet owners, evidence-based veterinary medicine, work/life balance in practice, the class divide in equine welfare, and positive approaches to stress.
The Wooldridge Memorial Lecture – the keynote address at Congress – will be delivered by Fiona Godlee, BMJ Editor-in-chief, who will consider the public understanding of science and the shared challenges, both scientific and clinical, faced by both doctors and vets.
BVA Careers Fair is the only part of the Show reserved for BVA members and forms part of BVA’s commitment to supporting members throughout their veterinary careers. The Fair includes sessions under three main themes: starting your career, career options, and taking the next step in your career. Highlights include:
- How to get the job everyone wants
- What should and shouldn’t be in my contract?
- Top 10 tips to avoid being sued!
- How to squeeze 30 hours into one day
- Entering a joint venture partnership and
- sessions on specific career options such as research, charity work, emergency and critical care, and industry
Other session topics include getting support from the practice, finance, insurance and pensions, how to talk to clients, work/life balance, specialisation, working overseas, and career changes.
As part of the BVA Careers Fair the BVA will be running one-to-one advice sessions for members on career issues, sponsored by RIG Vet Recruitment, and on financial issues, sponsored by Lloyd and Whyte.
