The British Veterinary Receptionist Association (BVRA) is continuing to grow its membership and has a new venue for its 2020 congress, with registration opening on 25th September. The Association has also recently announced a new Competent Veterinary Dispenser Award to help practices meet their obligations to ensure that non-veterinary staff are trained and able to dispense medication safely and has received 500 course registrations from veterinary receptionists and veterinary care assistants in the first month since launch. Another new initiative, driven by the BVRA, is Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Day which will take place on October 1st 2019 and celebrate the valuable contribution of veterinary receptionists.

BVRA Congress will take place on 20th and 21st March 2020 in Jury’s Inn in Hinckley. The congress provides a unique opportunity for vet receptionists, practice managers and other front-of-house staff to meet and network. Speakers for the event include Canine Behaviourist and RVN Rachel Bean, RVN  Charlotte Carr, Pet Bereavement expert Carrie Ball and trainer and vet Stephanie Writer-Davies. Topics include telephone triage, wellbeing, animal behaviour in reception and advice on bereavement and support during euthanasia. Registration can be completed at http://buytickets.at/bvra/298016.

Brian Faulkner MRCVS, Co-Founder of the BVRA and recently appointed Honorary Professor of Veterinary Business at Nottingham, says “We are delighted to have secured a new venue that can accommodate our rapidly growing member base and host a professional event and to extend the event to two days. Congress gives our membership a chance to gather together and enjoy great quality CPD. Providing a support network for veterinary front of house teams, and appropriate training and CPD is invaluable to the successful running of vet practices.”

BVRA has also recently launched the Competent Veterinary Dispenser Award (CVD). Many vets delegate the process of dispensing medicines to non-clinical colleagues. Anyone who handles a veterinary medicine must be deemed competent to do so, in line with regulations by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate and the Practice Standards Scheme set by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and this course meets this need. The CVD award is available via online webinars and can be previewed for free on the BVRA website: https://www.bvra.co.uk/Account/AVRDispensing.

The first annual Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Day will launch on October 1st this year. BVRA will be posting about the work of receptionists on social media and practices are invited to share the content. The Association will also be asking for nominations for receptionists who deserve a prize on its Facebook page, sponsored by Supreme Petfoods and using #VetReceptionistThanks. Practices are also encouraged to use the day to demonstrate their support for the receptionist team.

Brian says “Working in practice can be demanding and like all members of the vet team, receptionists have a tough job, often being the first call for clients experiencing a range of emotions. We wanted to create an event that simply gave people the excuse to say thank you...”
